Actor Mark Withers, celebrated for his roles in numerous acclaimed television series, including his portrayal of the gay character Ted Dinard on the iconic 1980s primetime soap opera "Dynasty," has passed away. Reports indicate he was 77 years old. News of his passing on November 22 was relayed to Variety by his daughter, Jessie Withers, who cited pancreatic cancer as the cause.

Throughout the 1980s, Withers carved out a substantial television career, making appearances on shows such as "Matlock," "Magnum, P.I.," "The Dukes of Hazzard," "Dallas," and "L.A. Law." His career saw a resurgence in 2016 when he appeared as coroner Gary in the first season of Netflix's acclaimed "Stranger Things."

Among his roles, Withers portrayed Coach Locke in eight episodes of the daytime soap opera "Days of Our Lives." However, he is most renowned for his role as Ted, the partner and confidant of Steven Carrington, the distinguished son and heir of the central family in "Dynasty's" inaugural season in 1981.

At that time, portraying an LGBTQ+ character in a major American drama was a groundbreaking endeavor. In a 2018 interview with the "Hollywood and Beyond" podcast, Withers praised the "Dynasty" creators for their ingenuity in depicting a genuine gay relationship free from excessive scandal or humor. He regarded the relationship with Steven as being "30, 40 years ahead of its time."

In recent years, Withers graced screens in series such as "Frasier," "Criminal Minds," "Sense8," "Castle," and "Drop Dead Diva."

Jessie Withers, in her statement to Variety, reflected on her father's legacy: "He faced his illness with the same resilience and dignity he applied to his craft, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, humor, and unwavering dedication. His exceptional talent and devotion to the industry will be cherished by colleagues, friends, and fans.
