AI recreated Sylvester Stallone's voice after his French dubbing artist passed away, leaving his daughter displeased.
The daughter of a late actor, who lent his voice to Sylvester Stallone in French-dubbed films for many years, has denounced the use of an AI-generated version of her father’s voice for the film “Armor.” The UK-based AI firm ElevenLabs announced in a now-deleted post on X, dated January 10, that they had replicated the voice of Alain Dorval, who passed away last February. This announcement prompted disapproval from his daughter, Aurore Bergé, who serves as France’s minister for sexual equality.
"I consented only to a trial. Merely a trial," she remarked on the company’s post, asserting that the company was not authorized to utilize or release Dorval’s replicated voice without securing prior consent from both her and her mother. "I never sanctioned this release," she insisted. "And my father would have never approved of it in its current form."
ElevenLabs, in a statement issued on Monday, affirmed their intentions to recreate Dorval’s voice. "For nearly fifty years, Dorval’s rich tones breathed life into Stallone’s legendary personas, such as Rocky Balboa and John Rambo, for French viewers," the statement declared. "Following his demise in February, we are embarking on a journey to regenerate Dorval’s voice using our AI expertise."
The statement further noted the company’s collaboration with Dorval’s family to safeguard his vocal legacy. "We have concurred that should the quality threshold not be achieved, the film will proceed with conventional dubbing—the family maintains complete control and will determine if and how this AI dubbing is utilized," ElevenLabs assured.
"This represents the inaugural use of our technology in a significant cinematic production. For us, the goal is to demonstrate how AI can augment storytelling while honoring creativity and tradition," the company emphasized. "Reviving Dorval’s voice is a means to retain what resonates with audiences while forging new avenues in cinema."
CNN has sought comments from both ElevenLabs and Bergé. "Armor" made its debut in the United States in November and is set to premiere on Amazon France in March. Stallone portrays an armored truck driver charged with delivering a dubious package.
