AP: Preliminary toxicology report reveals presence of cocaine in Liam Payne's system at time of death
A preliminary toxicology analysis on pop icon Liam Payne reveals traces of cocaine in his system at the time of his tragic fall from a third-floor hotel balcony in Argentina, as reported by The Associated Press. Final results from the toxicology assessment are anticipated in the coming weeks, though initial findings "indicated possible cocaine exposure," according to an Argentinian source who chose to remain unnamed due to lack of authorization to speak publicly.
Authorities continue to scrutinize the events surrounding the former One Direction member's fatal plunge at Buenos Aires' CasaSur Palermo Hotel. "All evidence suggests the musician was alone when the incident took place," stated Argentina's public prosecutor's office on Thursday.
At 31, Payne had previously been candid regarding his battles with addiction and mental health challenges. His former bandmates—Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik—paid homage to their "brother" with a heartfelt statement, "The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever."
On Wednesday, Buenos Aires police were dispatched to the hotel following a 911 call from a staff member seeking urgent assistance for a guest reportedly "overwhelmed with drugs and alcohol" and perceived to be "at risk," as revealed by audio obtained by CNN's local partner, Todo Noticias.
Marcelo Roma, the lead prosecutor on the case, confirmed last week that the preliminary autopsy attributed Payne's death to severe injuries and "internal and external hemorrhage" resulting from the three-story fall. Investigators suspect Payne might not have been fully conscious during the fall. "Based on the body's position and the nature of the injuries, it’s speculated that Payne did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself and might have fallen semi or completely unconscious," the report noted.
Images released by Buenos Aires police on Wednesday depicted a table in Payne's hotel room strewn with various items, including unidentified white powder, crumpled tinfoil, and a lighter, with charred marks also visible.
On Friday, Geoff Payne, Liam's father, traveled to Buenos Aires, visiting the site of his son's untimely death. Overcome with emotion, Geoff expressed gratitude to the fans assembled outside the hotel, acknowledging their support.
Throughout the weekend, One Direction admirers commemorated the singer through global tributes. Payne leaves behind his 7-year-old son, Bear, whom he shared with singer Cheryl Cole.
