Elton John Reveals Loss of Eyesight
Elton John remains unable to see, months following a grave eye infection. At a gala for "The Devil Wears Prada" musical in London on Sunday, he expressed gratitude to his husband, David Furnish, calling him his "pillar of strength."
"I've missed many previews as, regrettably, I've lost my vision. It’s a challenge to watch, but hearing it has been a joy, and tonight, it truly resonated," shared John, who composed the show's score.
In a recent "Good Morning America" interview, John disclosed that the condition is hindering his professional activities. "Unfortunately, I lost sight in my right eye in July due to an infection in the south of France. Four months have passed since, and my left eye isn’t in prime condition," he explained.
"There's optimism and hope for recovery, yet I find myself in a predicament. While I manage interviews like this, entering the studio to record remains daunting, as I can't even read lyrics," he stated.
At 77, John first went public about his vision issues in September. On Instagram, he revealed, "I've been confronting a severe eye infection, leaving me with limited sight in one eye."
"My recovery is ongoing, albeit sluggish, and it will require patience before my vision returns," John wrote, extending thanks to the "exceptional medical team and my family" for their support.
"Quietly, I’ve been recuperating at home this summer," he added, expressing optimism about his healing progress.
Though John concluded his touring career in 2023 after years of live performances, he composed music for "The Devil Wears Prada" musical, inspired by Lauren Weisberger's 2003 novel, which was adapted into a film in 2006.
