Ex-'Great British Bake Off' Host Sandi Toksvig Reflects on Bittersweet Experience
Life beneath the canvas of the “Great British Bake Off” tent isn't universally appealing. This sentiment rings particularly true for former co-host Sandi Toksvig, who shared the stage with the show’s stalwart Noel Fielding from 2017 to 2020.
In a conversation with The Times, Toksvig described her tenure on the series as “three of the longest years of my life.” She confessed that she never watched the show before or since. “Cakes can be bought in stores. I didn't relish the experience,” she remarked.
The judging segment proved especially irksome for Toksvig. Judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood would traverse the tent, sampling and evaluating each creation. “Noel and I stood for hours on end while Prue and Paul tasted everything. We neither spoke nor sampled,” she explained. It left her feeling detached from the process.
Ultimately, it was Toksvig’s spouse, Debbie, who prompted her departure, noting it failed to bring her joy. Despite her lack of enthusiasm for the role, Toksvig maintains a close friendship with Leith, describing them as “joined at the hip.” However, connections with Hollywood and Fielding have faded.
Since its inception in 2010, “The Great British Bake Off” has been a quest to find the UK’s premier amateur baker. Following Toksvig’s departure, comedian Matt Lucas took the reins in 2020, only to be succeeded by Alison Hammond the following year.
One certainty remains for Toksvig: her palate leans more toward the savory than the sweet. “It’s not my scene,” she stated. “I have a penchant for cheese.
