Jenna Fischer shares who she reached out to first after learning about her cancer diagnosis
Jenna Fischer delves deeper into her struggle with breast cancer. The beloved star of “The Office” confided in Hoda Kotb of “Today,” revealing the first person she reached out to post-diagnosis. "I dialed Christina Applegate," she recounted, "She picked up and immediately asked, ‘Which one is it?’ I replied, ‘It’s breast cancer.’ Her response was, ‘I effing knew it.’"
Fischer admitted delaying her routine mammogram before finally proceeding with the examination. "A mere three weeks later, they informed me, ‘Your mammogram appears normal. However, there are some areas that are difficult to discern. You possess very dense tissue. We recommend another mammogram, perhaps coupled with a breast ultrasound,’" she explained.
Initially, Fischer felt no anxiety when advised to undergo a biopsy, and she was alone when she peeked into her patient portal for results. "On a hike, I checked the portal and stumbled upon terms like ‘invasive,’ ‘ductal,’ ‘carcinoma,’ ‘malignant,’" Fischer shared. "I thought, ‘Those sound like cancer terminologies.’"
Throughout her journey, Fischer leaned heavily on her support network, including Applegate, herself a breast cancer survivor since 2008. Fischer wasn’t taken aback by her friend's reaction. "She’s got a salty tongue," Fischer said of Applegate. "Her colorful language is something I adore."
Having undergone chemotherapy, Fischer shared the most valuable counsel she received: "Live your life amidst this ordeal." "I adhered to that advice. Some days I merely ambled around my living room. Others, I strolled the entire block. Each day, I ensured to rise and engage in these activities, and I believe it had a profound impact.
