Mel Gibson Joins List of Celebrities Losing Homes to Wildfires
Mel Gibson's Malibu residence succumbed to the merciless Los Angeles wildfires while he was in Austin, Texas, recording a podcast with Joe Rogan. The Oscar-winning luminary disclosed this during a phone conversation with NewsNation’s “Elizabeth Vargas Reports.” Resilient in the face of calamity, Gibson expressed his emotions candidly.
"It's devastating and emotional," he acknowledged. "You dwell there for so long, and all your possessions are there. George Carlin's musings on 'stuff' come to mind. My belongings are now but ashes, a weight lifted by fire."
Aware of the blaze during his podcast with Rogan, Gibson felt uneasy. "Upon returning home, my house was gone," he recounted to Vargas. "At least those plumbing problems are history," he quipped. Despite the havoc, Gibson and his girlfriend evacuated safely, though she remained in California.
"I've never witnessed such complete incineration," Gibson remarked, reflecting on his ruined abode. "It could fit in an urn."
Other celebrities, such as Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Billy Crystal, Jeff Bridges, Paris Hilton, Ricki Lake, and Miles Teller’s wife Keleigh have shared similar losses. Moore updated her followers on Instagram, visiting her Altadena home to see "all this loss," sharing images of the remnants.
"Miraculously, our main house stands, though uninhabitable," Moore revealed. They lost the garage and back house. Crystal, in a statement to CNN, lamented the unfathomable devastation. "We ache for friends and neighbors who've also suffered," he said. "Our home since 1979, filled with love and memories, remains in our hearts."
Crystal highlighted the strength of the Pacific Palisades community, confident it will rise anew. Meanwhile, Jeff Bridges' family beach house was also consumed by flames, though his family is safe.
Ricki Lake shared her heartbreak on Instagram, mourning her "dream home." "Everything's gone," she wrote. "It was our paradise, where we planned our future. We never took our Malibu sanctuary for granted." Lake grieves the immeasurable loss, cherishing the memories of her three-year-old marriage there.
