The Menendez Brothers Share Their Story in a New Netflix Documentary.
Lyle and Erik Menendez expressed dissatisfaction with a recent Netflix portrayal of their story, yet another project by the streaming giant offers them a platform to voice their perspective.
In "The Menendez Brothers," a fresh documentary, the siblings engage in detailed interviews recounting the 1989 slaying of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, within their opulent Beverly Hills residence.
Interest in the Menendez saga surged anew following Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series, "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story," which the brothers have criticized as “outright fabrications.”
Los Angeles prosecutors declared last week they are reassessing new evidence submitted in anticipation of a hearing next month.
Key revelations from the documentary include:
Erik, now 53, and Lyle, 56, who have spent decades in prison for the crimes, provided interviews to filmmaker Alejandro Hartmann.
Their recorded conversations from behind bars narrate their account in their own voices.
“Lyle was the sole protector I ever had,” Erik stated.
The duo has claimed they resorted to murdering their parents after enduring years of alleged sexual abuse by their father, with their mother allegedly complicit.
Social media has rekindled interest among a new generation, fueling a movement advocating for their release.
TikTok, notably, has become a vibrant platform for discussion and reevaluation of the evidence.
“The sole reason for this special is the TikTok movement," remarks Pamela Bozanich, a prosecutor from the initial trial, in the documentary.
The brothers have garnered celebrity backing from figures such as Rosie O’Donnell and Kim Kardashian.
The documentary also sheds light on the brothers' life in incarceration.
Initially, they fought to be housed together in the same facility. Lyle Menendez expressed it was “excruciating” when that didn’t materialize.
Reunited in 2018, Lyle was transferred to the San Diego, California prison where Erik is held. They now converse daily.
"The Menendez Brothers" is available on Netflix.
