Vin Diesel acknowledged Dwayne Johnson at the Golden Globes, bringing to mind their well-known rivalry.
The longstanding Hollywood rivalry resurfaced momentarily at the Golden Globes on Sunday. Vin Diesel, while presenting, glanced towards the sea of faces and greeted, "Hey, Dwayne." The camera panned to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who offered a somewhat uneasy smile. Laughter rippled through the audience, likely recalling the tumultuous history between these "Fast & Furious" alumni.
Back in 2016, Johnson stirred the pot on Instagram. Though the post has since vanished, it was during the filming of "The Fate of the Furious" that he penned cryptic remarks. "Some male co-stars conduct themselves as real professionals, others don’t," he insinuated, sparking rumors of a Diesel-Johnson rift. Another post showcased a clip from the set, where Johnson emphasized the essence of "TEAM EFFORT." He stressed the importance of respecting each member’s contributions. "Like any family, there will be conflicts," he admitted. "Differences in views and beliefs are inevitable. Yet, conflict can be constructive if it leads to resolution."
Fast forward to 2021, Diesel shared his perspective in Men’s Health. As a franchise producer, he claimed a firm approach was necessary for Johnson, who portrayed Luke Hobbs. "Hobbs was a challenging role," Diesel explained. "I employed tough love to elevate his performance. Transforming Johnson from wrestling fame to cinematic gravitas was a Herculean task."
Johnson, however, seemed less than impressed. In a 2018 Rolling Stone interview, he reflected on their disparate filmmaking philosophies. "It took time, but I appreciate the insight. Whether or not our paths cross again is uncertain."
A 2021 Vanity Fair piece saw Johnson challenging Diesel's remarks about aiding his acting prowess. "I’ve navigated this industry many times over. Unlike Diesel, my roots aren’t in theater," he stated. "I come from a unique background and culture. I give my utmost to every project. If issues arise, I address them. It’s that straightforward."
Johnson later starred in the spin-off "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" in 2019 but skipped the 2021 "F9" installment. The duo hasn't joined forces since.
