John Mulaney has consistently donned a meticulously crafted suit for his comedy performances. “There’s an aura about someone declaring, 'I’m the entertainer here,’” Mulaney expressed to GQ in an interview shared on Tuesday, explaining the statement he aims to convey when he adorns himself for his audience.
The tale of transformation began in 2013 after he headlined an event at Atlanta’s Laughing Skull Lounge. He recollected arriving in attire indistinguishable from that of fellow comedians and spectators alike. “I recall pondering, ‘They paid to witness something special. Why does it appear as though one of the audience is up there speaking?’” he recounted to the publication.
Since then, Mulaney has ensured that his spectators have something visually captivating, along with laughter. However, a deeper, more heartfelt reason for his sartorial choice has surfaced, as shared by his wife, Olivia Munn. Munn disclosed to GQ that shortly before welcoming their son Malcolm in 2021, Mulaney confided in her, “I aspire to return home and don a suit daily. I want him to see his father dressed sharply and be proud of how he presents himself to the world.”
Presenting himself with pride, both to the world and his family, has become paramount for Mulaney, who, alongside Munn, welcomed their second child, daughter Méi June Mulaney, in September. This endeavor also encompasses Mulaney’s commitment to sobriety following his battle with addiction, a topic he has spoken candidly about, with Munn playing a significant role in his journey.
The duo revealed to GQ this week that prior to Malcolm’s arrival, Munn orchestrated a “mini intervention” for Mulaney, leading to an agreement for random drug testing at home—an agreement they still honor. “It’s a relief,” Mulaney remarked regarding Munn’s unwavering support. “I appreciate that it’s not even a question in her or anyone else’s mind.”
Munn noted that despite Mulaney’s initial qualms about relapsing, fatherhood has been a stabilizing force. “That was the one element that brought him joy and lightness,” she reflected on the period of their first pregnancy. “I remember his eagerness to share the news with his parents.
