Years after losing his mother, Tyler Perry admits grief still 'appears unexpectedly'

The holiday season invariably conjures memories of Tyler Perry's late mother, Maxine. She was enamored with Thanksgiving and exulted in the festive spirit of Christmas surrounded by her family. This month marks 15 years since her passing, a sorrow that Perry admits still lingers during this time of year.

"Grief arrives on its own terms," he conveyed to CNN's Anderson Cooper on the latest installment of his "All There Is" podcast, now in its third season. "Time is no antidote; it appears unbidden."

Perry shared an intensely close bond with his mother, whose love for singing was undeterred by her inability to hold a tune. Her influence was instrumental in his monumental success, as documented in his 2023 film "Maxine's Baby: The Tyler Perry Story," which partly explores the impact of her demise at the zenith of his career.

Providing for his mother fueled his aspirations. Her absence, he confided to Cooper, extinguished that fervor and motivation. "Her loss meant losing the love I knew, and with it, the drive to persevere and toil relentlessly," he reflected.

It took nearly nine years for Perry to emerge from the shadow of his grief. Initially, her death was suffocating. Now, he draws fortitude from his work and mentioned to Cooper that he often immerses himself in activity around the anniversary of her death. Embracing grief when it surfaces, he advises others to do likewise.

"I perceive it as a living entity, a visitor arriving at the most inopportune times," he remarked. "One cannot combat it. Allow it passage, for healing requires it to traverse through you."

Perry's dialogue with Cooper occurred before the tragic passing of Steve Mensch, the president and general manager at Tyler Perry Studios, who perished in a plane crash on Friday.

In a heartfelt Instagram tribute, Perry described Mensch as a "kind soul" and an exemplary leader. "We cherished him deeply and are shattered by his loss," he wrote. "My prayers are with his family as we strive to fathom this sorrow."

He concluded with a poignant reminder: "Life is fleeting.
